Every day I hear from students and families about things they wish they could change so they were better prepared for college. So here are some of the recommendations that I have made or others are recommending so you do not make the same mistakes. 1. Save copies of your US History essays because you can use them as essay starters for your freshmen history class. Keep any notes that you used to write the paper because even if you never learned how to cite you will have to in college. 2. Complete your portfolio – even the Essential Skills because I used two of them for my English Essay requirements. 3. “I went to preschool, kindergarten, elementary school, middle school and high school with the same kids. I played sports, went to the parties, and joined clubs because all my friends did them. I did not know what I really liked to do to fit in or what kinds of things drove me nuts until I went to college.” Recommendation: Meet and greet a wide variety of people during school so that you know where you really fit in. It will help during orientation week and when you are building new relationships with your roommates, suitemates, and floor mates. 4. “The hardest thing I had to learn was how to do things by myself – go to eat a meal, go to class without someone to walk with like I could in high school, go to study. It is really hard to get used to being on your own. Recommendation: Do not go back to your dorm room after class, go to the cafeteria, student union build, go work out in the gym, go to the library, sign up for tutoring anything to stay busy. It also helps when you are trying to meet new people. 5. “Its hard to meet people. I am so used to everyone knowing who I am and wanting to be my friend, I did not know how to make new friends.” Recommendation: Even if you are not a jock, participate in sports – intramural, dorm teams, sign up for a “gym” class. It is a great way to meet new people. Got another recommendation or words of wisdom add them to our list.
