The admission process is so much more complicated that it was even 4 years ago.  Colleges are looking at the character of the applicant as well as what leadership roles the potential student has taken on, what kind of community service have they participated in and was it for the minimum requirements that the high school asked for.  Students need to build their resume just like a professional builds a resume for a job or career.  The information that appears on the college admissions resume is different – detailed and comprehensive articulating how the learning experiences that a student has participated in over the course of 4 years prepares them for the demands that a particular college is asking of the student. 

To build that resume Step Into The Maze students complete: 

  1. A Professional Portfolio documenting 4 years of work
  2. A learning styles profile including study skills workshops
  3. A summary of Community service experiences (Total of more than 250 hours to qualify for scholarship awards)
  4. A summary of education history
  5. A summary of extra-curricular activities
  6. An Athletics/Music/Art Resume
  7. Job Shadow experiences summaries that provide “real world” experiential learning opportunities
  8. College and Scholarship Application Preparation

Important Questions to Ask:

  1. What is the placement rate for the desired major not just the placement rate for the college?
  2. How active is the alumna in the college especially in internship placements, scholarships, and job opportunities?
  3. Is it the student’s responsibility to locate any of the required internships or does the college take care of the placements?
  4. What are those things that I have to have in a college and the college setting that will help me feel safe, committed to the responsibilities of the academic program, and enhance the college experience opportunities?
  5. How will the college experience help me answer the key questions: Who Am I? What kind of life do I want to Lead? and How do I achieve it?
  6. What is the retention rate for returning Freshmen?
    What is the percentage of students that graduate in the traditional 4 years?
